At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutch’s pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer. An independent, nonprofit research institute located in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation’s first cancer avoidance research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Women’s Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. The Administrative Manager coordinates activities that prepare postdoctoral fellows and graduate students for their chosen careers. Also assists in coordinating the Research Ethics Education Program. Reports to the Director of the Office of Scientific Career Development . The manager works with the Director in making decisions that affect the current and future success of the program.

Responsibilities

Specific tasks
   » Provide management and oversight to the timely organization and delivery of professional development workshops for Fred Hutch scientists-in-training, in conjunction with the Student-Postdoc Advisory Committee ( SPAC ). Responsible for creating and maintaining a database documenting these workshops and the evaluation of these programs
   » Assist in the coordination of the Research Ethics Education Program
   » Update and maintain the Postdoc results Database, creating reports as needed
   » Manage the SPAC Course Scholarship, Travel Award, and Business Card Programs
   » With the Director, manage recruitment, retention and mentoring of SPAC Board Members
   » With the Director, develop and monitor the OSCD/SPAC budget
   » Develop and manage OSCD/SPAC web pages and listservs for Fred Hutch scientists-in-training (e.g., postdoc-student, reagents). Announce opportunities via a weekly newsletter
   » Communicate with new postdocs and graduate students to orient them to Hutch programs
   » Manage the McDougall and Hutchison Mentoring Award Programs
   » Manage teaching opportunities for scientists-in-training (e.g., Cancer Biology 100)
   » With the Program Director, coordinate the production and distribution of recurring reports
   » Analyze national and local data and gain advice from national sources to help form policies regarding the training and career needs of scientists-in-training at the Fred Hutch
   » Performs other tasks as required

Represent the OSCD and Fred Hutch

   » With the Director, serve as a liaison/advisor between scientists-in-training and other Fred Hutch administrative departments, including between SPAC and administration
   » With the Director, liaison with HR for policy development and implementation and budget management pertaining to the Graduate Student/Postdoc Childcare Subsidy Program
   » Attend internal Fred Hutch events significant to scientists-in-training (e.g., Hutch United, Research Ethics Education Committee, Diversity ERGs)
   » Represent the Fred Hutch at national conferences focused on postdoc professional development (e.g., NPA, etc)

Qualifications
   » Bachelor's degree is required, PhD preferred.
   » Postdoc practice and/or expertise of and practice with the professional development needs of postdocs and graduate students strongly preferred. Postdocs who wish to move into postdoc/grad student professional development work are especially encouraged to apply
   » Excellent communication expertise strongly preferred
   » Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines
   » Have strong computer expertise, including Microsoft Suite
   » expertise of biomedical research terminology very valuable. Prior practice in an academic or scientific research setting preferable.
