The Department of Romance Languages & Literatures and the Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is accepting applications for a Senior Lecturer in French and Portuguese. This is a full-time position with a five-year renewable term, to start as soon as possible.As Program Director the Senior Lecturer will be responsible for managing and coordinating all aspects of the French Language Program in the Department of Romance Languages & Literatures, including the supervision of language lecturers teaching in the program who are represented by the Service Employee International Union. The annual teaching load will be six language courses in French and/or Portuguese, reduced to at least four while serving as Program Director.Required are a near native or ACTFL Superior-level proficiency in French and Portuguese, an advanced degree in a related discipline, and broad teaching practice at the college or post-secondary level. Specialized training in second language acquisition is highly desirable. practice developing and teaching with authentic material and practice in curricular coordination is required. candidates need to demonstrate the capability to design and articulate curricula across multiple sections and level and to work effectively with faculty members. The prosperous candidate will be the manager of unionized lecturers, with responsibility for directing and evaluating their work, and, if necessary, for corrective action. The Program Director also will supervise graduate student language teachers. In addition, the Program Director will manage all pedagogical, administrative, and financial aspects of a language program, and provide pedagogical training and mentoring to language lecturers and graduate students.
