Job Description
listing title: Senior Small Mammal Specialist
Reports To: Director of Animal Operations/Curator
FLSA Status: Non-exempt, full-time
This full-time (40-hour) working, hands-on position is responsible for superviseing the Small Mammal collection and Keepers. This person will work closely with the Curator/Registrar and Director of Animal Operations to supervise and manage the animal collection. This position will lead the team in a positive direction and provide guidance, promote a team environment and set high standards. The Senior Keeper networks with other zoo and industry partners to embrace best practices. The Senior Keeper is a managerial function and demonstrates leadership abilities behaviors and lead by example. The Senior Keeper accepts managery function in the absence of the Curator and Director. Additional guidance is received through established policies and procedures, plus verbal and written communications.
   » Represent Central Florida Zoo with professionalism and demonstrates leadership abilities through example.
   » Demonstrate and maintain high performance of everyday keeper tasks in animal care, habitat and housing maintenance, safety, record keeping and behavioral husbandry.
   » Supervise keepers, enrichment and training initiatives, animal care expertise and fosters positive attitudes and a team environment.  Delegates responsibilities and with Curator or Director assistance addresses performance issues.
   » Work closely with the Director with collection management and welfare of animals in this area.
   » Responsible for team schedule, working closely with other mammal teams to ensure highest standards of animal care.
   » Seek opportunities for self and team to further their expertise and expertise by encouraging involvement in matters related to education, research and participation with outside partners in the zoo and conservation communities. Work with staff to provide everyday care to the small mammal animals in the department.
   » Supervise and/or perform all aspects of the husbandry, nutrition, enrichment and behavioral conditioning and care of the carnivore and small mammal collection.
   » supervise interns work and standards.
   » Maintain and keep up to date with all AZA, USDA and Florida Fish and Wildlife regulations as they pertain to the Zoo collection.
   » Maintain meticulous everyday animal records in compliance with all regulatory agency guidelines.
   » Report animal illness, maintenance, safety, horticulture and other needs to appropriate staff.
   » Recognize and report changes in an animal’s behavior, which may be indicative of health concerns and be able to provide medical care and administration of medication under the direction of the Veterinary staff, Director and or CEO.
   » Plan and evaluate animal diets with Animal Nutrition Lead and Director.
   » Maintain necessary carriers, equipment and supplies for the collection.
   » Participate in enclosure design, modification and oversight.
   » May be required to assist with projects or everyday tasks in other animal areas.
   » Maintains highest level of safety protocols and procedures.
   » Develop and maintain professional and respectful relationships will all Zoo staff.
   » Interact with guests with formal and informal discussions as a professional.
   » Adhere to all Central Florida Zoo policies and procedures.
   » Other tasks as assigned.
Appropriate qualifications:
to execute this job prosperously, an individual must be able to execute each essential duty satisfactorily.    » Minimum 18 years old.
   » Must provide a negative TB test and negative drug screen result.
   » Must have a minimum of 5 years’ practice in animal care in a zoological facility.
   » leadership abilities practice preferred.
   » Must be able to work as part of a team yet be able to delegate to team members.
   » Must be self-motivated and goal oriented.
   » Must have strong communication expertise, both written and verbal, when interacting with team members, co-workers, visitors and vendors. Must foster good communication between departments and provide significant Guest interactions.
   » expertise of operant training techniques and enrichment, preferably at an AZA institution.
   » expertise of husbandry requirements and the avoidance of Zoonotic disease.
   » expertise of Zoo’s layout and animal collections to respond quickly during animal emergencies.
   » Must be able to maintain effective working relationships with other Zoo employees and the public. 
   » Must have the capability to work flexible hours, including weekdays, weekends, holidays and evenings.

EDUCATION / practice:
A college degree in biological science is preferred. practice in a zoological environment is essential. A minimum of 5 years working practice with small mammals.
   » Valid Florida driver’s license.

   » While performing the tasks of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
   » The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle, reach or feel and manipulate objects or controls.
   » The employee is frequently required to sit, walk distances, climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel and crouch.
   » Several job functions of this position are performed in confined areas.

   » Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather and have the physical capability to execute strenuous work, including lifting at least 50 pounds repetitively
