Organizational Unit Overview
The East Carolina University, School of Medicine, Pediatric Outpatient Clinic provides outpatient medical care for children from birth to age 21. The clinic staff assists clients in obtaining diagnosis and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses as well as provides nursing care. Staff provides health education and access to information to enhance client health and to prevent illness. Staff provides for client comfort and safety while endeavoring to be as cost effective to keep medical costs down. The Pediatric Clinics are a service component of the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine. These clinics are involved in the treatment of patients as a function of the training and education of medical students, physicians and allied health personnel in primary medical care on a regional consultative basis for eastern North Carolina.
Job tasks
The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Certified Medical adjunct to work in the Pediatric Outpatient clinical areas. The selected candidate will assist in the outpatient management of general pediatric and adult patients (may include pediatric subspecialties such as Hematology, Oncology, Adolescent Health, Endocrinology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, and Infectious Disease). This position necessitates an energetic and enthusiastic individual to assist with the outpatient health care management of both well and sick children. Independent care will be expected, including administering immunizations. Responsibilities of this position include nursing support, technical assistance, assisting physicians with some procedures, and the activities of maintaining a safe environment. The selected candidate will interact with residents, medical students, nursing students, and other learners on a everyday basis to teach procedures and concepts that relate to nursing practice. The selected candidate will also serve as an educator for the patient population and their families regarding preventative health measures, disease, and disease management. Currently, hours of clinic operation are from 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, with a rotating scheduled late day to cover patient care.
If not already certified, please note that you must receive your Certified Medical adjunct (CMA) certification within 6 months from your start date for continued employment.
Minimum Education/practice
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to execute the work.
License or Certification required by statute or regulation
Certification through the American Association of Medical adjuncts (AAMA) is required. If not CMA certified, candidates should have prosperously completed the requirements from an accredited medical assisting program that permit eligibility to sit for a national CMA certification (AAMA) exam within six months of employment.
Preferred practice, expertise, Training/Education
Possess one year of outpatient clinical practice or completion of an appropriate internship.
Current basic CPR certification.
Demonstrate the capability to handle high volumes of phone calls and be able to communicate effectively with patients.
Possess excellent interpersonal communication expertise and basic computer expertise needed for entering data into the electronic medical record.
Accuracy and attention to detail and the capability to communicate with patients and patient families, as well as with healthcare professionals.
capability to work independently, prioritize and handle multiple tasks and complete tasks effectively and in a timely manner.
Six months of pediatric related practice is preferred, in addition to prosperous completion of a two-year medical office adjunct program and certification.
License or Certification required by the Department
Certification through the American Association of Medical adjuncts (AAMA) is required.
