Applications are invited for the position of Mr. and Mrs. Joe F. Sanderson Endowed Chair / Director of Clinical and Population Research, Mississippi Center for Obesity Research (MCOR). candidates must have a PhD, MD, or both and a record of innovative accomplishments in clinical or population research related to nutrition, obesity and/or related cardiovascular, renal or metabolic diseases.
The Director will lead the clinical and population science research of the MCOR and foster collaborative research among faculty in different departments. This individual will bring a track record of administrative, mentoring and scientific skills with a personal record of accomplishment. The Director will help recruit and manage clinical/population research teams focused on treatment and avoidance of obesity and related cardiorenal and metabolic disorders. The prosperous candidate will have excellent interpersonal and leadership abilities skills, a record of substantial publications in leading journals, extramural research funding, and a well-defined research vision. The MCOR is a multidisciplinary center at UMMC and is leading a state-wide effort to translate research results into programs that prevent and more effectively treat obesity and related metabolic diseases. The MCOR offers outstanding core facilities, including a new Clinical Research Center, as well as generous laboratory space in the state-of-the-art Arthur C. Guyton Research Center. UMMC has a large, diverse patient population and is the home of the Jackson Heart Study, an NIH-sponsored study of risk factors for cardiovascular, renal and metabolic disease in >5300 African Americans. There is a large group of prominent, NIH-funded researchers working in the area of obesity-connected cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases who offer excellent opportunities for collaboration. The Department of Physiology and Biophysics ranked 4th in total NIH funding among all physiology departments the past year and its members serve in leadership abilities positions of multiple professional societies. The MCOR currently receives funding from two major NIH center grants that provide resources for core facilities, grants for new investigators, and pilot grants. The Sanderson Endowed Chair / Director of Clinical and Population Research will have the opportunity to assume a leadership abilities function in the NIH-funded Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research (MCCTR) grant. Integral to its education and research missions, UMMC provides wide-ranging patient care programs, including bariatric surgery and weight management programs. Three specialized hospitals on the Jackson campus include the only children's hospital in Mississippi, a women and infants' hospital, and a critical care hospital, along with University Hospital.
