Our School
Founded in 1930, The Tatnall School is an independent, coeducational, college-preparatory day school situated on a pastoral, 110-acre campus in Wilmington, Delaware. Wilmington’s location offers ample access to Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., by train and car. Tatnall includes four academic divisions with 600 students from PK3 through grade 12. Tatnall’s challenging academic programs, combined with accomplished faculty, create a family environment committed to excellence.
The Position
The Director of Facilities supervises all aspects of the maintenance and upkeep of the physical plant and grounds of The Tatnall School. Situated on over 100 acres of pastoral land, Tatnall’s campus includes five (Early Childhood Center, Lower School w/gym, Middle/Upper School with athletic center and theater, Performing Arts Center, and Operations) buildings. The athletic facilities include multiple athletic fields (including one artificial turf field for field hockey and girls lacrosse), a six-court tennis center, three pools, eight-lane track and field complex, five New Castle County retention areas, two baseball fields, four playground areas, cross country course, and a trail system for outdoor teaching and learning.
The Director of Facilities answers directly to the Head of School (CEO) and manages a staff of six maintenance personnel (including a one part time administrative support staff member) and works closely with key administrative offices, including the Business Manager, Division Heads (academic), and the Directors of Athletics, Summer and Extended Programs, and Laird Performing Arts Center, as well as the Offices of Admissions and Alumni and Development. The Director of Facilities will act as the liaison between the School and the Building and Grounds Committee of the Board of Trustees to inform them, in conjunction with the Head of School, of the various needs, plans, and projects underway or under consideration, and to work closely to plan for the future of the school with members of the Board. The Director must be willing to work non-traditional hours, possess stamina, and have a fun-loving, collaborative, creative, and entrepreneurial disposition. This full-time, 12-month position offers competitive compensation and benefits.

Strategic and Tactical Job responsibilities:
   » To plan, design, and operate programs, including hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating staff that supervise everyday operations
   » To ensure the campus and buildings thereon meet all current regulatory and licensing standards
   » To to establish and manage the annual facilities budget
   » supervise a team of operations personnel that support everyday and preventive maintenance needs of The Tatnall School
Main tasks for this position include the maintenance and operation of The Tatnall School facility which is active nearly seven days a week and from early in the morning until late evening as a college preparatory school of 600 from September to June, a robust summer program, broad rentals of facilities, and events sponsored by parents, trustees, and the School.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
General
   » Ensuring that the department is working in concert with the Mission of the School and the Vision of the Head
   » Ensuring that staff schedule and complete work orders for the campus in a timely fashion and providing timely, accurate information to the community regarding work orders and projects
   » To supervise and evaluate the work of a buildings and grounds crew
   » Perform work orders for parents, alumni, and outside events as approved by key administrators
   » Manage, coordinate, and supervise the tasks of the operations staff, contractors
   » Order and deliver supplies for school including cleaning, paper, food, office supplies
   » supervise distribution of mail and packages for staff on a everyday basis
   » To develop, maintain, and report all required environmental, health, and maintenance standards as required by law and to work with the administration, to ensure compliance with all regional, state and federal regulations and laws as they impact the school
   » To support the school and its leadership abilities
   » to execute other tasks as assigned by the Head of School
Buildings/Physical Plant/Events
   » Set up and breakdown for meetings, Commencement, Founder’s Day, athletic events, parties, and special events
   » To create and supervise an continuing equipment replacement program and PPRRSM budget
   » HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, roofing, etc.
Housekeeping
   » To create and supervise the careful maintenance and cleaning programs that keep the School’s appearance in exemplary condition.
   » Contracted: Ensure that all buildings are maintained on a everyday basis to provide a clean, well kept, and positive teaching and learning environment
Grounds and Athletic Facilities
   » Ensuring the good operation of the physical plant and grounds of the entire campus
   » Contract: Landscaping, athletic fields, fertilizing, mowing, pruning of trees and shrubs
   » Snow and ice removal
Safety and Security
   » Coordinates comprehensive security/school safety program
   » Participate in the development and maintenance of a Crisis Response Plan
   » Advises and assists leadership abilities team (or HOS) in matters involving criminal activities on school campus
   » Fire drills, opening and closing campus, Lock Down Drills, Protocols and Procedures, etc.
   » Scheduling inspections: fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, security systems, camera systems, electrical systems, county inspections
   » Maintaining and ensuring the good repair of all safety and security systems, including, but not limited to, smoke and fire detection/suppression, alarms, cameras, etc.
   » Provides and/or coordinates PD and training for emergency protocols
Planning
   » Creation of RFPs meeting all current standards and providing accurate, detailed information to contractors
   » Solicitation and coordination of bids and proposals for projects
   » To arrange bids and develop specifications for all outside contractual work of more than $1,000
   » Complete a Facilities Review with Blackney Hayes Architects
   » Prepare to lead a Master Planning process for the School in concert with the
Head and BOT Buildings and Grounds Committee
   » Play an integral function in reviewing and revising the Strategic Plan

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Walking distances across a 110-acre campus with multiple buildings, playing fields,
pools, and Performing Arts Center, lifting and moving equipment, tables, etc., and the
capability to manipulate a keyboard for computer operation are required. The prosperous
candidate must possess a valid driver’s license. This position requires activities to be
performed both inside and outside of a climate-controlled office environment and under
various environmental conditions across four seasons.
