Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Program Manager to join the Administration Department. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Program Manager will be part of a journey to explore and understand one of Earth's hidden frontiers - the Ocean Twilight Zone (OTZ). Exploration of the OTZ combines exacting science, innovative technology, and broad engagement to turn knowledge into actions that improve knowledge of the planet and how to live sustainably on it. Information technology will integrate interdisciplinary science, technology, and engagement to explore and study the ocean's mesopelagic realm.
This position manages the connection and coordination of complex, interdisciplinary projects in the areas of communications and outreach; research and development; and scientific endeavors relating to the Ocean Twilight Zone. This position manages procurement, schedule, scope, cost, resources, risk and quality of multiple projects and teams; and supervises progress of the operations.
This position also provides support to the Vice President of Marine Facilities and Operations, including program management support for important initiatives and activities. For these tasks, an knowledge of the operational administrative aspect of seagoing oceanography, including that funded through traditional (US Government) and philanthropic sources is highly desirable.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Ocean Twilight Zone Project
   » Formulates, organizes and monitors inter-connected projects
   » Develops appropriate strategies and objectives, and monitors progress making adjustments as appropriate
   » Develops and controls deadlines, budgets and activities
   » Manages resources consisting of organizational planning, project team(s) acquisition and staff development activities
   » Responsible for project reporting, including annual work plans, annual reports, periodic reports, tracking performance against metrics and other reports as required
   » Key interface with sponsors and their organizations
   » Assists Development Office with fundraising activities
   » Assists OTZ team with developing and maintaining collaborations, including scientific, engineering, engagement and operations (including ship time)
   » Facilitates project communications, providing support to Communications department and hosting meetings and teleconferences for various stakeholders
Marine Facilities and Operations
   » WHOI waterfront redevelopment projectEast Coast Oceanography Consortium
   » Development and coordination of private research vessels that complement WHOI's core activities
   » UNOLS Research Vessel operations
   » Other tasks as may be assigned by the VP of Marine Facilities and Operations
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
   » As deemed necessary by manager
REQUIRED EDUCATION & practice:
   » Advanced degree in science or engineering, plus at least ten (10) years' practice in project/program management or other related managerial position.
   » Must possess demonstrated excellence within a related field and must have thorough knowledge of project/program management techniques and methods.
   » Demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities and organizational expertise; excellent analytical and communication expertise (oral/presentation and written) are required.
DESIRED EDUCATION & practice:
   » Project Management certification is beneficial.
PHYSICAL Requirements:
Physical tasks include mostly sedentary and/or occasional prolonged standing/walking. Other occupational requirements include working around others, and with others. Will be exposed to prolonged work hours as projects may require. Physical tasks are subject to change.
