The State University of New York, System Administration, located in Albany, New York, is searching for a Senior Communications Specialist who will report directly to the Press Secretary within the department of Communications & Marketing. In this function, the employee will work collaboratively with colleagues in the department, the Chancellor’s Office, and across system to build on SUNY’s national, state, and international profile, actively and aggressively pitching positive, local, national, and international media coverage. They will also work closely with the Communications & Marketing team to help strengthen SUNY’s internal public outreach tools including the website, blogs, and social media, and develop channels to discover, share, and pitch good news from across system. Candidates should be effective communicators earning strong results from pitches, press releases, op-eds, letters to editors, tweets, among other communications with key reporters. In addition, candidates should possess excellent writing, editing, and research expertise. Qualified candidates will have a proven track record of generating high-level, positive coverage and preference will be given to candidates with higher education practice.

  • Talking Points, Fact Sheets, Frequently Asked Questions, and Briefings

Requirements

Appropriate qualifications:


       »
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher, preferably in a Communications related field

  •    »
  • Five years or more practice and success in media relations

  •    »
  • Strong writing, editing, and research expertise, particularly for press and web

  •    »
  • Creativity regarding how to convey messages to target audiences

  •    »
  • Strong attention to detail and project management

  •    »
  • Familiarity with current higher education issues

  •    »
  • practice with science/research writing a plus

  •    »
  • practice in higher education a plus
