Summary:The Husbandry Manager, Aquatics, is responsible for the care of all living species and supervision of Senior Aquarists, Aquarists, and volunteers in the assigned husbandry areas.  everyday responsibilities include scheduling and superviseing aquarist staff, trouble-shooting and problem-solving, project management, human resources tasks, budgeting, procurement, timekeeping, and other administrative tasks. The Husbandry Manager acts as a positive function model, supporting and developing staff growth and development. tasks may also include everyday husbandry (prepping food, feeding, cleaning, medicating, and observing animals), scheduling, as well as coordinating with other departments.
Major Job Job responsibilities:
   » Responsible for the husbandry of aquatic living collections which may include marine and freshwater fish, invertebrates, plants, and algae.
   » supervises and implements everyday husbandry routines and health assessments including (but not limited to) feeding, behavioral enrichment, record-keeping, training, exhibit maintenance, and design updates to animal enclosures and exhibits.
   » Recommends, developed, and implements policies, protocols, and procedures related to animal collection husbandry.
   » Supervises staff and volunteers as required including special projects and coordination with other staff to ensure best husbandry practices and exhibit aesthetics in all assigned areas.
   » Responsible for supervising, evaluating, counseling and connected documentation for assigned staff and volunteers.
   » Working with the Director of Husbandry, fosters team approach, effective two-way communication, and a collaborative spirit.
   » Lead by example by having a positive attitude, practicing high standards, modeling professional workplace behavior, and creating a supportive team atmosphere. 
   » Responsible for administrative tasks relating to supervising staff, including scheduling and time-card approval, workers’ compensation paperwork, and training documentation. Participate in the hiring and development of husbandry staff.
   » Responsible for supply inventory and procurement.
   » Responsible for collaborating with the Education Department to develop and implement educational opportunities as they relate to animals in the aquatic collection.
   » Works in conjunction with the Records and Husbandry Coordinator for animal documentation, inventory, AZA requirements, maintaining everyday records, and helping to ensure that staff are following guidelines for record-keeping.
   » Assists in ensuring compliance with Federal, State and Local agency laws, regulations, codes and ordinances as well as AZA guidelines.
   » Assists in identifying and safely transporting specimens to the California Science Center through organization of trades/loans/purchases with other zoological institutions, or as necessary, through collecting trips, in line with the Institutional Collection Plan.
   » Assists in reviewing and making recommendations for the Institutional Collection Plan.
   » Assists the DSO/Director to plan and participate in collecting trips for new/supplemental aquatic specimens and completing all necessary paperwork and permitting in conjunction with the Records & Husbandry Coordinator.  
   » May travel for collecting, conferences, industry research, educational opportunities and as assigned.
   » Responsible for caring for living collections in any and all emergency conditions.
   » Assists Husbandry Manager, Terrestrial as necessary to promote cohesion and team environment.
   » Practices safety first work habits (animal/staff/volunteers/guest) while maintaining the husbandry of the living collection at the highest level.
   » Contributes to the mission of the California Science Center by stimulating curiosity and inspiring science learning by creating fun, memorable practices for the guests.  
   » Performs other tasks as required.Appropriate qualifications:
   » Bachelors degree in Biology, Zoology or related field required OR equivalent practice.
   » 5+ years practice with 3+ years in a managery function in the husbandry and display of aquatic organisms required, preferably at an AZA accredited institution.
   » practice supervising/hiring/disciplining/developing/training of staff and volunteers.
   » expertise of modern principles of animal care and welfare, including behavioral enrichment, exhibitry, nutrition, disease, training, water quality, and transport.
   » Specific expertise of temperate Pacific and tropical ecosystems preferred. 
   » practice collecting marine organisms and expertise of various collecting methods as well as prosperously transporting aquatic organisms is preferred.
   » expertise of safe animal handling practices and maintaining a safe working environment.
   » capability to work effectively in wet conditions indoors and out as well as inclement weather.
   » Must be a certified Rescue SCUBA diver and certified Scientific Diver (or able to complete AAUS Scientific Diver training within 6 months of hire) with the capability to pass annual dive physical requirements.
   » practice with vessel trailer transport, vessel launching, boat operations and boating safety/emergency procedures preferred.
   » capability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (occasionally up to 75 pounds), kneel, bend, crouch, squat, and stand for extended periods of time. 
   » Excellent computer (MS Office programs such as Excel, Word, and Outlook) and organizational expertise. practice with Tracks record-keeping system highly preferred.
   » capability to work independently and in a team setting.
   » Strong leadership abilities expertise and capability to motivate, develop, and support staff required.
   » Excellent written and verbal communication expertise.
   » capability to work a flexible schedule which may include weekends and holidays.income:$53,000 to $60,000 a year.
