Requisition # 2018-9302
Department Andlinger Cntr for Energy/Env
Category Research and Laboratory
Full-Time / Part-Time Full-Time
Application Deadline

The Andlinger Center for Energy and Environment at Princeton University is accepting applications for a Research Strategist who will work with leadership abilities to engage Princeton University faculty, research staff, and external collaborators and partners in advancing the mission of the BioLEC, a newly funded Energy Frontiers Research Center (EFRC) sponsored by the Department of Energy.

The incumbent will serve as a scientific liaison and strategy manager for BioLEC, and will bring together the two primary agents Chemistry and the Andlinger Center, to address the Department of Energy's needs for research synthesis and scientific cooperation. BioLEC aims to address the basic scientific challenge of precisely breaking and selectively editing molecules using the power of light. While this breakthrough goal has long been sought, success has proven immensely challenging because many chemical bonds are too strong to be transformed by the present state-of-the-art chemistry. BioLEC hypothesizes how two (or more) photo-excitations could be used to propel more powerful chemical reactions. BioLEC is empowered by a scientific approach that unites basic energy science research, involving solar photochemistry, photosynthetic systems, and catalysis. Twelve investigators with a wide variety of skills will shift the field from passive solution-phase catalysis to photon-aided catalysis where two-electron chemistry is controlled. The BioLEC EFRC thereby strives to enable unprecedented opportunities for saving energy in production processes for new fuels and chemicals.

In this fast-paced, research-focused function, the incumbent will be involved in most aspects of research at BioLEC, including creation of and attending research meetings, convening and supporting investigator workshops, coordinating and writing center-wide proposals and reports, and working with staff to disseminate information about BioLEC-related research activities. The prosperous candidate draws upon knowledge of, and practice in, the academic science and engineering research environment with a focus on the energy and environmental sectors to cultivate relationships with and among academic research groups and external scientists and engineers.

Under the guidance of the director of BioLEC, serves as primary contact and stewards research-located relationships. Synthesize research interests and research teams and partnerships among member investigators; activate and cross-pollinate research groups in efforts to bring ideas together to maximize collaborative, integrative results. Leverage scientific background and practice to develop stronger ties between BioLEC investigators, industry partners, and University constituents in the areas of research, educational activities, career and internship opportunities, and other program-related activities. Assist in the management of the BioLEC Postdoctoral Program. Act as lead to project coordinator to the organize research workshops, meetings and conferences, and assign tasks as needed to further research-located activities.

The incumbent will encourage research progress within BioLEC and contact with investigators at universities and national laboratories. Assists with dissemination of results, coordinates research on-site, and at partner or collaborator institutions. Provide investigators, Department of Energy contacts, and companies with a point of contact who possesses a strong science/engineering technical background to help navigate faculty research areas and projects as well as university structures and contacts. Support collaborative reporting efforts and supplemental grant applications. Mentor students in collaborations. Interface with students, postdocs, and faculty to generate technically-focused communications materials and reports. Efforts will be placed on dissemination of technical science and engineering strengths and to promote the BioLEC's success.

Ph.D. in a related science or engineering field preferred; bachelor's degree required. Strong practice in translating dynamic research efforts into collaborative, integrated relationships. Knowledge of energy-related technologies and interest in technological developments preferred;

- excellent written and verbal communication skills with the capability to convey scientific knowledge across technical and general populations;

- excellent interpersonal skills, including the capability to interact with a diverse population comprising Princeton University community members, corporate executives, funding agency representatives, and external administrative staff;

- general knowledge of university research activities and sponsored research principles preferred.
