Overview

Reporting to the Director of Library Information technology and Digital Services, the Library Information technology Operations Manager supervises a team of operations and devops engineers who are responsible for managing the Library's Information technology infrastructure, and interfaces with the campus Office of Information Technology and Office of Audit and Compliance to ensure that the Library is in alignment with emerging and locally established best practices.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities
   » Manage a team of four operations and devops engineers who are responsible for managing the Library's technology infrastructure, which includes approximately 50 physical servers, an ESXI virtual environment, which hosts approximately 150 VMs at any time; 1.5 petabytes of storage, load balancers, database clusters, and firewalls. The installed base of hardware features a variety of major vendors, and supported operating systems include various versions of Ubuntu and CentOS Linux and Microsoft Windows.
   » supervise the deployment of new clients and servers, using automated provisioning tools and specialized desktop machine images.
   » Manage continuing support for mission-critical production systems, including the coordination of off-hours support for critical library services, including shared support for networked printers and scanner.
   » Maintain SLAs with Information technology stakeholders, and share maintenance of Library's Information technology Service Catalog.
   » Set and maintain issue and change ticket workflows and policies, utilizing ServiceNow.
   » Collaborate with other teams in the Information technology group to help ensure that all teams can capitalize on each other's skills and improvements.
   » Help Develop systems administration procedures and backup policies for all Library data, following digital preservation best-practices.
   » Serve as the Library's primary contact with the University's Chief Information Security agent.
   » Plan and prioritize new systems implementations; Evaluate and recommend new platforms and technologies that will enhance the Library infrastructure for the best delivery of Library information services and applications.
   » Participate in planning and projecting budgets for acquiring hardware and software.

Qualifications

Required qualifications and practice:
   » Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and/or equivalent practice
   » 5+ years practice in Information technology operations; 2+ years of management practice
   » capability to communicate effectively with management and colleagues with varying amounts of technical skills
   » availability to accept and act upon constructive feedback
   » practice with an automated provisioning and deployment tools such as Chef, Puppet, Ansible
   » Demonstrated use of physical datacenters with both physical and virtual hosts particularly VMWare
   » knowledge of the tools at the disposal of an Operations Engineer including monitoring and logging, and knowledge of the time and place to use each one
   » capability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in written documentation
   » Pragmatic problem solving abilities dealing with complex systems
   » capability to implement and maintain scripts related to systems management, e.g. in Bash, Ruby, or Python; comfortable maintaining configuration files in YAML, JSON, and other markup formats
Desirable practice:
   » Work practice in an academic library or other cultural heritage institution
   » practice with Hashicorp tools / Infrastructure as code
   » Hosted/Cloud migrations: practice restructuring features in applications and migrating to AWS
   » Ubuntu Linux systems administration
   » practice with Load Balancing or other Application Delivery Tools like relayd, BigIP
   » Knowledge of the Windows Server environments (Windows Server, IIS, Active Directory)
