The Director of Institutional Advancement (Director) is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individuals, corporations, and foundations for major gifts to advance the priorities of the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai’i (Center) and for memberships and sponsorships for the Center.
The Director reports to the Hawai’i Island Regional Director of Development, and works closely with the Executive Director of the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center to accomplish its goals.
The Director works closely with the UHF Hawai`i Island Regional Office and the University of Hawai`i Foundation Central Offices (UHF) of Annual Giving, Estate and Gift Planning, Prospect Research, and Corporate and Foundation Relations to accomplish its goals.


   » Work with the Hawai’i Island Regional Director of Development, the Executive Director of ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center, and ‘Imiloa’s executive leadership abilities team to develop, implement and achieve fundraising goals. Annual and campaign goals are set jointly with the Hawai’i Island Regional Director of Development and the UH Foundation VP for Development. These include goals related to number of significant visits, number of new prospects, number of solicitations, and gifts raised.
   » Articulate the case for support so that individuals engage with the vision and priorities of the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center and are willing to support and invest in its future.
   » Generate and manage an effective pipeline of donor prospects from ‘Imiloa’s existing membership and supporters to provide a steady flow of prospects and move donors to higher levels of giving. Build and actively manage a portfolio of 75-125 major gift prospects.
   » Conduct discovery calls to qualify prospects.
   » Build relationship strategies for prospects and coordinate contacts with ‘Imiloa leadership abilities and program agents, as necessary. Review prospect strategies regularly for refinement and determine what has to be done next to move the prospect closer to the point where Information technology is appropriate to ask for a gift.
   » Engage prospects and donors in ‘Imiloa’s various events and activities as appropriate, including occasional donor-cultivation events or fundraisers.
   » Identify and facilitate opportunities for major gift prospects and donors to serve in significant volunteer functions when appropriate.
   » Build strategies to secure corporate memberships and sponsorships in collaboration with ‘Imiloa’s marketing and membership staff. Cultivate relationships with member corporations for higher levels of support.
   » Work closely with the UHF annual giving office in support of their efforts and strategies to increase annual unrestricted support to ‘Imiloa in the form of annual fund campaigns and other initiatives.
   » Identify programs, exhibits, and initiatives appropriate for support by private or corporate foundations and write proposals for prospective funders. Work with UHF Corporate and Foundation Relations to schedule and submit proposals.
   » Participate in the UH Hilo/UHF prospect management system, development agent meetings and UHF general meetings.

Membership Services
   » Develops thorough knowledge of ‘Imiloa’s program and exhibit priorities and institutional needs, in order to promote membership and to cultivate future development opportunities. Works closely with Marketing function to identify and develop strategies to grow ‘Imiloa’s new membership base and increase lapsed member renewal rates, while moving current members to higher levels.
   » Ensures member pricing is woven all over all ‘Imiloa programming offered to the community. Works closely with ‘Imiloa Front Desk to ensure members are stewarded appropriately. Develops annual goals for building membership revenue and ensuring timely mailing of renewal notices and follow ups, striving to maintain renewal rates in excess of 50%.
   » Works with marketing and design (UH Hilo Graphics) to create and update promotional materials for development priorities and membership acquisition and renewals, such as membership brochures and renewal reminder letterhead.
   » Coordinates member acknowledgement process to ensure members are communicated with and thanked for their support in a timely manner. Verifies accuracy and then transmits everyday membership data (new members & renewals) to UHF. Monitors data and troubleshoots various membership issues and complaints, as needed. Manages data sensitively and appropriately to minimize risks.
   » Identify businesses and institutions for sponsorships, contact and develop strategies and proposals in collaboration with Hawai’i Island Regional Director of Development and ‘Imiloa Executive Director.
   » Supervises adjuncts/volunteers and works closely with other ‘Imiloa staff in planning and implementing special events and activities for members and prospective members, to cultivate support of the center from the membership base.
   » Other tasks as assigned.

   » Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is highly preferred.
   » A minimum of five years of progressively responsible practice in a not-for-profit fundraising environment. Appropriate private sector practice may combine with volunteer practice in a not-for profit organization.
   » prosperous practice working with volunteer leaders and university administrators to ensure an integrated, organized effort.
   » The capability to work effectively in a large, complex and dynamic organization balancing multiple priorities is required.
   » Strong communications expertise, with the capability to build consensus and cohesion.
   » capability to articulate the fundraising goals of the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center to the public, and to establish, build and maintain long term relationships with ‘Imiloa members, high net worth individuals and other community members is required.
   » Unquestionable integrity and strong sense of professional ethics is required.
   » Enthusiasm for the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center’s mission; sensitivity to and interest in Hawaiian culture and language, and knowledge of science and astronomy also definite pluses.


located at the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center at UH Hilo, the position requires travel, mostly by auto, but occasionally by other modes of transportation. The employee must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. Must be able and willing to travel inter-island and nationally upon request. The Director will need to work some weekends and evenings and must be able to work to the demands of the position, which may exceed a 40 hour work week.
