The University of Bristol is looking to appoint an outstanding candidate as Head of School of Mathematics who can provide inspirational leadership abilities and strategic management within the School.

This is a key academic leadership abilities position within the University of Bristol, supporting the attainment of the University’s vision and overall objectives, and participating in the collective formulation and delivery of the University’s academic strategy. We are seeking for a proven track record of excellent partnership working, both internally and externally, as well as academic excellence within a chosen field with the capability to engage, lead and influence across a wide variety of inter-faculty disciplines. The Head of School will also have a deep commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

The appointment is part of a major strategic expansion of the School of Mathematics, which in the forthcoming academic year will move to a substantial Grade-II listed property in the heart of the University precinct, providing office space for over 100 academics, 100 post-graduate students and 80 post-docs. The building is currently being transformed into a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility for mathematics at a cost of £33M. The School was recently organised into five newly established research institutes, comprising the Institute for Applied Mathematics, the Institute of Mathematical Physics, the Institute for Pure Mathematics, the Institute for Probcapability, Analysis and Dynamics, and the Institute for Statistical Science.

With a population of over 400,000, Bristol is the largest city in the south west of England and the region’s leading centre for business, culture and education. Bristol was named the best city in Britain to live in by the Sunday Times in their ‘Best Places to Live Guide 2017’.
