Description:

Ultimately, effective treatments of spinal disorders must be located on science. The New England Baptist Spine Center educates our fellows to recognize the relevance of anatomy, pathophysiology, epidemiology, genetics, neurobiology, and psychology in the predicaments of patients with spinal disorders. Fellows are trained to assess patients located on research-derived history and physical examination techniques, and to review all diagnostic studies systematically. Fellows are required to promote "informed decision making" through science-located education of patient about their predicament, and truthful presentations of the effectiveness of potential treatments located on high-quality clinical trials. Fellows lgain the science behind our internationally recognized physical therapy program that utilizes intense, non-pain contingent exercise to rehabilitate patient with chronic spinal pain and discapability. Fellows received detailed-oriented instruction in interventional procedures, and will independently perform 6-700 procedures by the end of their fellowship year. All of our fellow's patient encounters are considered educational, and supervised by our 6 staff physiatrists.

The Spine Center is a teaching site for residents of the Department of PM&R of Harvard Medical School, for students from other Boston training programs, and for regional, national and international practicing clinicians from a variety of medical disciplines. The Spine center has a long history of clinical research. We are actively involved with science-located spinal pain treatment initiatives with regional medical systems, the United States Military and the Veterans Administration.
We seek fellows with a desire to spend their clinical career improving the care of spinal disorders in their community. Fifty percent of our fellow's time is spent in clinic, 40% performing spinal procedures, and 10% with academics/research.
