Job Description
Title: Pre-Sales Forester
Job Job location: McMinnville, Oregon
Immediate manager: Manager, Oregon Tree Farm
Status: Exempt

Basic Functions
Develop and maintain the timber and resource inventory of the Tree Farm through data collection, software operation, and reporting. Prepare short and long-term plans for timber harvest operations, as well as providing field layout of such plans. Provide forest management support for other Miami employees, as needed.

Essential Functions
   » Develop and maintain process for collecting and processing timber stand information on the Tree Farm.
   » Assist in annual harvest plan development, located on predicted market developments and trends, as well as resource availcapability and characteristics.
   » Perform field layout of timber harvest units with connected riparian areas and road access, as well as submitting all required notifications to regulatory agencies. Provide engineering design and support for transportation infrastructure and logging systems.
   » Maintain geographic information system for the Tree Farm to a high level of accuracy, updating and improving the database as information becomes available. Produce operational maps (timber unit, stand, area, planning, etc.) for Tree Farm personnel.
   » Maintain up-to-date inventory information on the Tree Farm through timber cruising and mapping. Update inventory located on changing market conditions and product specifications. Provide reports on same as requested.
   » Operate computer software to evaluate timber cruises, forest inventory, map processing and production, timber growth models, and future harvest schedules.
   » Supervise contractors and inventory crews. Ensure all contractors and crews comply with all safety rules and regulations.
   » Be Miami's representative for professional and protection associations as assigned.
   » Perform forest management activities in support of other Tree Farm personnel, including (but not limited to) fire patrol and suppression, slash burning, contractor supervision, regulatory agency interaction, public interaction and meetings, wildlife monitoring, professional association attendance, and project administration.
   » Other tasks as assigned by Manager.
Requirements

Qualifications
expertise - A Bachelor of Science degree in forest management, operations, engineering, or closely related field is required. Substantial technical and field expertise of forest inventory, mapping, and collecting and analyzing timber data. expertise of computer systems and forestry related software. expertise of timber markets and various products produced. Forest engineering, sale layout, and survey expertise required. expertise of laws, rules, regulations, and policies related to the work.
practice - Four years of practice as a forester / engineer in the forest products or closely related industry is preferred, two years required. practice in computer design, mapping, and data processing required.
expertise / Aptitudes - Computer located data management and analysis expertise. Background in collecting and processing timber inventory data. expertise to read and prepare maps using aerial photographs and other materials. capability to use computer-located cruise programs (such as Super ACE), inventory programs (such as FLIPS), spread sheet programs (such as Excel), graphic programs (such as PowerPoint), word processing programs (such as Word), design programs (such as AutoCAD), geographic information system programs (such as ArcMap), forest engineering programs, and other general resource-located programs. Statistical analysis. capability to use Office suite of programs (Word, Excel, etc.).
capability to operate a 4-wheel drive pickup truck (manual or automatic transmission) on active logging road. Possess a valid driver’s license and must have an acceptable driving record as determined exclusively by Miami Corporation (must submit to and pass background check). Operate C.B. radios, compass, clinometer, relaskop, diameter tape, logger’s tape, increment borer, and other forestry and survey related tools.
capability to supervise subordinates and crews, as well as prepare managery related records and reports. capability to schedule work and determine work priorities. capability to work with people and to give them clear directions.
High level of capability to communicate through verbal and written methods. Good capability with numbers. Work under deadline pressure and extended hours and weekends.
Working Conditions - Indoors and outdoors. broad walking in uneven, brushy terrain under adverse climatic conditions for distances of up to 10 miles per day and climb 100%+ slopes for to miles. capability to load and unload 70+ pound objects, i.e. spare tires, chainsaws, herbicides, fire equipment, etc. Required to work around large log moving and harvesting equipment. Assist with slash burning and fire fighting.
Level - Works under little to no direct supervision. Job requires broad and continual exercises of discretion and independent judgment.
NOTE: Employees must comply with all safety regulations as required by Miami and all regulatory agencies, and to avoid and prevent accidents. This includes wearing all safety equipment while on the job site. Employee is expected to comply with all policies contained in Miami’s Personnel Policy Manual, Computer Use Manual, and all other policies enacted by Miami.
