Position Summary
The Department of Biomedical Sciences of the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, Faculty Research adjunct position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
The Johns lab in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at OSU is seeking a Faculty Research adjunct (B.S. or M.S. synthetic organic chemist) who is interested in medicinal chemistry research. Our research aims to discover new medicinal compounds for infectious diseases, including Leishmaniasis, a Neglected Tropical Disease, which affect some of the world's poorest people. We use cutting-edge medicinal chemistry research techniques to design new compounds. The bulk of our research effort is on the synthesis of these novel compounds. This position will perform synthetic organic chemistry techniques to prepare medicinal compounds for Leishmaniasis and mycobacterial infections.
The Department of Biomedical Sciences is in the College of Veterinary Medicine at OSU and conducts world-class basic science research to benefit both human and animal health. We have a collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment. One of our department's key areas of skills is infectious diseases.
Position tasks
The primary responsibility of this position will be synthetic organic chemistry research to prepare small molecules with novel medicinal properties. The candidate will gain practice in the design of new compounds and drug discovery chemistry.

   » Perform synthetic organic chemistry reactions following provided protocols
   » Independently make modifications to protocols located on results
   » Safely handle air-sensitive and reactive reagents
   » Purify products using flash chromatography
   » Obtain and analyze NMR spectra for synthetic products
   » Follow experimental protocols reported in scientific literature
   » Maintain an organized library of synthesized compounds
   » Identify supplies, reagents, and solvents needed for planned research in advance to avoid delays
15% Laboratory Management
   » Assist PI with training of student researchers
   » Ensure that the laboratory is kept clean, safe, and organized
   » Maintain laboratory equipment and make minor repairs as needed.
   » Manage chemical inventory
   » Order chemicals and supplies
5% Reporting
   » Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook and collection of spectra
   » Communicate research results with PI and colleagues
   » Contribute to the preparation of scientific publications by preparing experimental data and protocols
Minimum/Required Qualifications
   » B.S. degree in chemistry or a closely related discipline that includes one year of Organic Chemistry curriculum.
   » practice performing synthetic organic chemistry reactions and/or purifying reaction products using silica gel flash chromatography. capability to interpret NMR spectra.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
   » M.S. in chemistry or closely related discipline preferred.
   » practiced synthetic organic chemists who can work independently and are passionate about using chemistry as a tool to advance human health are strongly encouraged to apply.
   » practice in either an academic or industry research lab with multi-step organic synthesis and handling air-sensitive reagents is preferred.
   » Demonstrated strong initiative, quick learning agility and clear communication skills will be preferred.
   » A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Work will primarily be in a laboratory. The researcher must be able to lift 20L cans of solvent, handle chemicals, and perform hands-on laboratory tasks typical of a synthetic organic chemistry laboratory. The position will require walking/travelling across campus to use NMR and MS spectrometers in other buildings.
