Position Summary
The Department of Biomedical Sciences of the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Research Associate position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
The Johns lab in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at OSU is seeking a Research Associate (Ph.D. Synthetic Organic Chemist) who is interested in medicinal chemistry research. Our research aims to discover new medicinal compounds for infectious diseases, including Leishmaniasis, a Neglected Tropical Disease, affecting many of the world's poorest people. We synthesize novel new compounds using state of the art synthetic chemistry techniques. We design these compounds using a variety of medicinal chemistry research techniques. This position will design and synthesize medicinal compounds to advance infectious disease drug discovery research.
The Department of Biomedical Sciences is in the College of Veterinary Medicine at OSU and conducts world-class basic science research to benefit both human and animal health. We have a collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment. One of our department's key areas of skills is infectious diseases.
Position tasks
The primary responsibility of this position will be synthetic organic chemistry research to prepare small molecules with novel medicinal properties. The candidate will gain practice in the design of new compounds and drug discovery chemistry.

   » Use cutting edge medicinal chemistry techniques to design novel compounds that test specific hypotheses and advance our research
   » Propose synthetic strategies for preparing compounds located on skills and literature
   » Prepare new small molecules using modern synthetic organic techniques.
   » Safely handle air-sensitive and reactive reagents
   » Isolate and purify synthetic products using a variety of methods including extraction, chromatography, distillation, and crystallization
   » Characterize products using NMR, MS, and other analytical techniques.
   » Maintain an organized library of synthesized compounds
   » Identify and acquire supplies, reagents, and solvents needed for research in advance to avoid delays

   » Assist PI with training of student researchers
   » Ensure that the laboratory is kept clean, safe, and organized
   » Maintain laboratory equipment and make minor repairs as needed.
   » Manage chemical inventory
   » Order chemicals and supplies
10% Reporting
   » Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook and collection of spectra
   » Communicate research results and laboratory business with PI
   » Present research results at scientific meetings and to collaborators
   » Assist advisor with preparing grant applications and scientific publications
Minimum/Required Qualifications
   » Ph.D. in chemistry or closely related discipline with broad practice in multi-step synthetic organic chemistry, including performing reactions, handling air-sensitive reagents, purification techniques, and NMR characterization. The person must be able to independently prepare complex new small molecules using modern multi-step organic synthesis techniques.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
   » practice synthesizing nitrogen-containing compounds such as heteroaromatics or alkaloids is desirable. skills performing additional laboratory techniques related to medicinal chemistry and drug discovery may be preferred. Information technology is highly desirable that the person has demonstrated strong initiative, clear communication, high quality research products, and availability to work as part of a team.
   » skills performing in vitro assays and microbiology techniques is desirable, but not required.
   » A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Work will primarily be in a laboratory. The researcher must be able to lift 20L cans of solvent, handle chemicals, and perform hands-on laboratory tasks typical of a synthetic organic chemistry laboratory. The position will require walking/travelling across campus to use NMR and MS spectrometers in other buildings.
