POSITION SUMMARY
Heathwood Hall is looking to hire a new English teacher starting in August 2018. English teachers at Heathwood Hall are typically able to teach any course the department offers: Composition and Literature, British Literature and Composition, American Literature and Composition, Introduction to Rhetoric, AP English Literature and Composition, AP English Language and Composition, and a variety of upper-level electives. In addition to developing students’ literary and rhetorical analysis expertise, in every course we seek to develop clear thinking and process-located writing across a variety of rhetorical modes. Grammar and vocabulary are emphasized as well, particularly in the 9th and 10th grade courses.
The ideal teacher will not only be an practiced English teacher but will also be a strong communicator, an active community member, and have a passion for helping students develop as readers, writers, thinkers, and human beings.
ESSENTIAL tasks
   » Teach up to five (5) sections of Upper School English as assigned.
   » Serve as an advisor to approximately twelve (12) students each year.
   » Participate in parent teacher conferences, and keep parents generally informed about students’ performance in the classroom.
   » Participate in community meetings (Morning meeting, chapel, faculty meetings, etc.)
   » Engage with students and colleagues outside the classroom (e.g. by serving as club sponsor, attending performance or athletic events, etc.)
   » Serve on committees as needed
   » Seek out professional development opportunities
managerY RESPONSIBILITIES
   » Supervise students in the classroom, study hall, and on classroom field trips.
INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS
   » Must have strong interpersonal communication expertise needed with students, parents, and colleagues.
   » everyday contact with administrators, colleagues, and other staff.
SPECIFIC JOB expertise
   » Enjoy working with and have a thorough knowledge of the specific developmental needs of adolescents.
   » capability to use a variety of assessment techniques, strong instructional and classroom-management expertise.
   » Energy, empathy, flexibility, and collaboration.
   » Good organizational and communication expertise.
   » capability to lift 40 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS
   » Primarily indoor classroom teaching with occasional field trips. Some evening and weekend commitments. The Upper School program is housed in three buildings used by the four grades (9-12).
