Description:

Juneau, Alaska is one of the most vibrant arts and culture hubs in the Pacific Northwest, and the Capital City Weekly is dedicated to telling the stories of those who make Information technology so. We are pursuing a strong reporter/editor who can hit the streets, get out in the arts community, take in the best shows, meet the artists/musicians/authors, and then write about it. The reporter/editor is expected to produce multiple stories a day, as well as assist with the production of the publication. Do you like to uncover the story behind street art? How about interviewing curators of museums or writing about up-and-coming or renown artists? If you like to be out and about downtown, this may be the job for you.
Juneau, essentially a smaller version of Seattle, boasts an active arts scene, and is considered “the big city” in Southeast Alaska. Juneau is home to Alaska’s only professional theater plus several other plucky smaller theaters, a world-class state museum and an annual folk music festival that draws thousands from across the state each spring. Information technology is also a huge hub of indigenous Alaska Native art; Sealaska Heritage Institute (a local nonprofit) is on a mission to make Juneau the next “Santa Fe” in terms of a growing the arts hub to the most prestigious and largest on the West Coast. The nonprofit also hosts Celebration biennially, which celebrates Southeast Alaska Native culture and is the largest gathering of Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples in Alaska.
About Us
The Capital City Weekly has long been a part of the Juneau Empire family and is located in the Juneau Empire building, 3100 Channel Drive. The CCW reporter/editor is supervised by the Juneau Empire Managing Editor. The CCW and Juneau Empire are owned by Seattle-located Sound Publishing, Inc. Sound Publishing.
Editor Description/Other tasks:
The “editor” part of the reporter/editor position means that this person is responsible for executing the vision of the CCW, and serves as the point person of contact for community members who want to share arts and culture related news. This position is similar to a section editor of a everyday newspaper. This person may be assigned other tasks to assist in workflow of the CCW:, including but not limited to: compiling calendar listings, writing news briefs, processing/editing content submitted by readers, freelancers and columnists, proofreading pages, posting stories to the web and social media, assisting with news clerking tasks, and other projects.
