Minimum Qualifications

   » Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution in education, administration, counseling or a related field
   » Two years of practice counseling/advising youth
   » practice working with individuals who are low-income, first-generation, or who are otherwise at risk
   » Demonstrated capability to plan and conduct workshops, field trips, and educational activities
   » expertise of college and university admission and enrollment procedures
   » expertise of federal and state financial aid
   » Effective oral and written communication expertise
   » practice with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and database management
   » availability to work some evening and weekend hours
   » Effectiveness in the following College organizational competencies:
o Translating College purpose, values, and vision into organizational action
o Collaborating and facilitating
o Creating and innovating
o Anticipating and responding to change
o Providing vision and leadership abilities

 

Preferred Qualifications

   » Master's degree from an accredited institution in education, administration, counseling or a related field
   » practice working with federal Department of Education programs or TRiO Programs
   » Work practice with North Carolina's public schools and community organizations
   » Fluency in Spanish
   » Work practice in a college setting
   » practice with Blumen and/or PowerSchool database
   » Personally overcome obstacles similar to those practiced by Talent Search program participants

 

Position Description

SUMMARY:
The Student Success Advisor, TRIO Talent Search provides academic, personal, financial, and career counseling to middle and high school students in support of them completing a secondary school diploma, enrolling and completing a postsecondary credential. This is a full-time, 12-month positions funded by a five year U.S. Department of Education grant and will be located at Thomasville City Schools. The positions report to the Director, Talent Search, and has the following Job responsibilities:
Job responsibilities:
   » Works closely with the Director, TRIO Talent Search, Thomasville School administrators, teachers, and counselors to identify program participants in middle and high schools and execute a comprehensive program to improve high school persistence, graduation, and postsecondary enrollment to completion
   » Conducts recruitment, outreach, and advising strategies for middle school and high school participant's in support of academic success, grade promotion, and college readiness
   » Completes individual needs assessments and works with students to develop customized, individual College, Career, and Academic Plans (CCAPs); reviews report cards, transcripts, and other student academic reports
   » Meets one-on-one with students and families to discuss academic and non-academic obstacles, monitoring student progress to provide appropriate resources for success
   » Assists students with obtaining academic tutorial services, including scheduling study expertise workshops and activities each semester; collaborates with tutors
   » Monitors program participants' academic records, attendance records and disciplinary records.
   » Advises and mentors participants, promoting the development of positive self-concept and helping students envision futures beyond high school
   » Delivers workshops and communicates with families to increase student success
   » Provides coordination for and leads student-centered college and university exploratory field trips, enrichment activities, and cultural events
   » Assists students with career exploration, aptitude assessment and selecting postsecondary programs; provides assistance with secondary and post-secondary course selection
   » Assists students and families in completing college admissions and financial aid applications and preparing for college entrance exams and/or admissions requirements
   » Participates in middle and high school team meetings to review timelines, discuss objectives, refine implementation plans, and problem-solve
   » Maintains participant files, tracks services, and submits reports as required by the grant
   » Participates in professional development appropriate to the functions of the position, including state TRIO Talent Search meetings/conferences and Department of Education sponsored training
   » Supports the mission, vision, and values of the College, City Schools, and the TRIO Talent Search grant
   » Perform other tasks as assigned which support the purpose and initiatives of the Program and College

ADA SUMMARY:
ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking expertise with the capability to process information and exercise good judgment; ease of mobility within the work environment and other areas of campus and College locations; travel between campus locations may be required; and effective use of all forms of communication including use of computers.
