Los Angeles Zoo

Education Specialist*

Must be available to work days, weekends, holidays, and some evenings.
Summary of tasks:    An Education Specialist conducts education programs, including on-grounds interpretation, play facilitation, and interactions with zoo guests on a everyday basis while providing information about habitats, wildlife and conservation.
Distinguishing Features:   An Education Specialist will implement the Zoo’s educational programming by connecting visitors to the zoo’s mission through on-grounds interpretation, and facilitating guided and free play in designated locations all over the Zoo. The hours are varied.  Employees will be assigned to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Example of tasks:
   » Conducts informal programs such as on-grounds interpretation and assists in formal education programs.
   » Interacts with children and parents facilitating guided and free play practices.
   » Interacts with Zoo guests on a everyday basis and answer guest questions.
   » Presents information about habitats, wildlife, plants and conservation.
   » Monitors guest and animal safety.
   » Assists with administrative and logistical tasks as necessary.
Requirements:   Passion for the Zoo and its mission is required.
Adequate educational level: Completion of 12 semester units or 18 quarter units in a recognized college or university. Six months practice working with children or the general public may be substituted for the educational requirement.
Physical Requirements:  Strength to execute average lifting of up to 15 pounds and occasionally over 25 pounds; the capability to walk over uneven terrain and stand for extended periods of time;  the capability to work outdoors in inclement weather; and coordination for activities involving stooping, kneeling, and crouching.  This position requires everyday walks (a minimum of 15-20 minutes) through the Zoo and may walk 2 or more miles per day.
License A valid California driver's license may be required.

Further Comments

Part-Time position*This is a civil service exempt, at-will position. The incumbent will not accrue any civil service tenure or contractual rights in such position. All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for employment and have received a conditional job offer from the Los Angeles Zoo will be required to complete a criminal background investigation which includes fingerprinting. In the event that the job applicant fails to participate with the criminal background investigation or fails to satisfactorily complete or pass the criminal background investigation, the applicant's conditional job offer will be rescinded or revoked and his or her consideration for employment will be terminated


$17.29 per hour
