Summary
The Veterinarian provides support and quality veterinary care to a diverse animal collection in mixed species exhibits representing ecosystems such as a Californian kelp forest and the Sonoran desert. The Veterinarian provides guidance and recommendations to Husbandry Managers and the Director of Husbandry for creating protocols and managing the living animal collection and develops/implements a comprehensive preventative health and medical care program. The Veterinarian practices empathy and compassion with our animals and staff.

Major Job Responsibilities
   » The Veterinarian, with consultation of the other animal management staff, is responsible for the design, implementation, and surveillance of the veterinary care program.
   » Diagnoses, treats, and follows up on all animal health concerns.
   » Responsibility as the Attending Veterinarian on the California Science Center’s Program of Veterinary Care for USDA Class C license.
   » Responsibility to be listed as the Veterinarian for the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs/Veterinary Medical Board premises clinic permit.
   » Works collaboratively with others to ensure that a high-quality animal health management program is being fulfilled with humane and legal obligations to provide proper husbandry and veterinary medical treatment, focusing on preventive medical care. 
   » Participates with Husbandry Managers in training and coaching staff to recognize signs and symptoms of health, appropriate/inappropriate outputs, and proactively providing appropriate inputs to promote excellent welfare.
   » Develops and implements policies and programs related to proactive, preventative animal health management and continues assessment and improvement upon such programs.
   » Participates in animal acquisitions as Information technology relates to quarantine and including assisting with application processes of the permitting and licensing from various local, State, and Federal agencies.
   » Establishes effective testing procedures during quarantine for all animal acquisitions to ensure the health of collection and compliance with government regulations.
   » Maintains all necessary medical records, reviews nutritional records, and makes dietary recommendations. Records should include physicals at least annually including visual inspections of each animal (as appropriate) in the collection.
   » Evaluates health and safety implications of proposed or existing behavioral enrichment programs.
   » Ensures compliance with all local, State, and Federal governmental regulations. This includes keeping permits, registrations, reporting current related to our work and equipment.
   » Conducts post-mortem studies and analyses.
   » Responsibility to be listed as the practicing Veterinarian for medical supply vendors.
   » Contributes to the mission of the California Science Center Foundation by stimulating curiosity and inspiring science learning by creating fun, memorable practices for the guests.  
   » Performs other tasks as required.Qualifications
   » DVM or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited institution
   » Completion of an approved residency or internship program in zoological medicine (ideally related to fish medicine) OR at least three years clinical practice in a zoo or aquarium, preferably with an AZA-accredited facility.
   » Valid California Veterinary license or capability to obtain one (and maintain good standing) before start of employment at the California Science Center.
   » Valid DEA license for controlled drugs.
   » Specific knowledge of fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals from southwestern United States deserts and the Pacific Coast desirable.
   » Prior practice with marine and freshwater fishes at an aquarium or similar zoological institution strongly preferred.
   » Excellent diagnostic expertise and capability to read and interpret clinical laboratory results.
   » broad knowledge of modern principles and methodologies of zoo and aquarium veterinary medicine through behavioral, environmental, nutritional, preventative medicine, diagnostic, restraint, treatment, disease control, and epidemiological techniques.
   » Proven expertise and capability to use precision during delicate procedures.
   » Highly organized with strong planning expertise and attention to detail.
   » Excellent written and oral communication essential, including the capability to clearly, compassionately, and respectfully communicate veterinary needs to a diverse staff in a team setting.
   » Demonstrated capability to prevent and resolve conflict.
   » capability to remain calm and focused under pressure and during stressful situations.
   » Strong computer expertise required, including proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications. practice with electronic record-keeping systems desired; practice with Tracks preferred.
   » capability and availability to accept a reasonable number of text messages, emails, and/or phone calls on unscheduled days as needed to provide consultation on animal health issues as they arise.
   » Must be able to contribute toward fulfilling on-site work needs on the following days each week: Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday.income$35.00-$50.00 per hour
