Position Description and Board Expectations
The YMCA of Sioux Falls Board of Directors is actively seeking a visionary leader who will build upon a history of strong executive leadership abilities and continue a culture of excellence within the YMCA as an active resident of the community.  The YMCA seeks to be at the center of community life as a leading provider of youth programming, maintain and grow a tremendous day camp, and focus equal attention to health and wellness services. The CEO will be uniquely positioned to champion the YMCA mission and embark on the next chapter of this nearly 100-year old organization.
Qualified candidates must have a solid business acumen, sound judgment, and exceptional leadership abilities expertise. They must have a proven track record that demonstrates an capability to prosperously implement and promote the YMCA’s services and activities to the community; assess community needs and develop programs in partnership with others to meet those needs; raise funds through annual and capital campaigns; develop and manage a staff; and work with a YMCA board that focuses on strategic issues. 
The Sioux Falls YMCA is blessed with a strong and active Board of Directors. In partnership with the board, the CEO will develop a real-time strategic plan, as well as a long-term vision for the association. The new CEO will be expected to engage the talents of the board members through an effective committee system to form a strong strategic partnership between board and staff. 
The YMCA of Sioux Falls has many prosperous collaborations and partnerships within the community. The CEO will need to continue and expand these community relationships. Information technology is critical for the success of the Y that the new CEO become seen as the face of the Y in Sioux Falls. For the CEO to be effective, they will need to engage, empower and motivate leadership abilities staff to lead their departments in alignment with the strategic vision. 
income Range & advantages:  $112,500 to $116,500 annualized, commensurate with practice. Retirement contribution (7% paid by the YMCA, 5% paid by employee), vacation plan, health plan, relocation reimbursement, and other benefits per personnel policy included.

History: The Sioux Falls Family YMCA was founded in 1886 and has been in continuous operation at our current location since 1919.  Since the early years, the YMCA has positively changed countless lives in our community through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

YMCA Service Area and Locations: The Sioux Falls YMCA has a service area which includes several counties outside of its own (Minnehaha) and the potential to provide programming & services to the communities of Brandon, Hartford, Harrisburg and Dell Rapids; as well as the possibility of joint services in outlying communities of Mitchell and Brookings.
Facilities: In 2014 the Y opened a renovated 38,000 square foot YMCA facility in downtown Sioux Falls.  Part of a total renovation of the 1922 built 100,000 square foot structure, included remodel that now offers a 52-unit affordable housing complex for adults and families with qualifying rent located on their household income. The remainder of the YMCA includes modest fitness spaces, world-class racquetball courts (the Y hosts the largest racquetball tournament in the U.S. each year), a large gymnasium, locker rooms, flexible fitness spaces and an area in progress for youth who “take over” the facility each day at 4:00 p.m. The Downtown Y also includes day-care.  
Child Development Center offers programs that include day care (6 weeks to five years old) and preschool.
The YMCA Youth Performance Center is the YMCA hub for Y-Club afterschool program, gymnastics, group exercise classes, birthday parties and the Parent's Time Out program.
Located on 60 acres of land, the YMCA operates one of the largest day camps in the nation.  YMCA Camp Leif Ericson is a combination of dense forest, open green space and is bordered by the Sioux River. This historic camp will serve nearly 3,500 youth during the summer of 2018 in six camp sessions.
Members and Program Participants: The YMCA serves a total of 10,000 members and program participants. The primary purpose of our downtown location is to serve youth, ages 6 weeks through High School.  All youth age 17 and under are eligible to receive a FREE YMCA membership. 
Programs and Services: The YMCA offers a variety of programs all over Sioux Falls and facilities referenced above, including serving as the largest early learning provider.
Staff: In addition to the CEO, there are 12 Full-Time and a fluctuating Part-Time staff of over 100 when camp is in session. The CEO supervises five direct reports which include Finance, Human Resources, Childcare, Programming and Camp.
Financial: The YMCA current budget is $3.4M.
Annual Campaign Support: The YMCA raised a total of $580,000 in 2017. Of this, $290,000 was from the Annual Campaign with the remainder from an annual golf tournament and patron gifts. We anticipate a similar if not slightly larger increase in 2018. 
Community: Located in the south-east corner of South Dakota, Sioux Falls is the largest City in the State at 160,000 in total population.  Surrounded by several smaller communities, the service area in the Sioux Empire is approximately 200,000. Sioux Falls is a shopping hub, offers a variety of dining opportunities, and hosts minor league sports teams including the NBA D-League Sioux Falls Skyforce, baseball’s Sioux Falls Canaries, hockey’s Sioux Falls Stampede, and Indoor Football’s Sioux Falls Storm.
Advantages to Area:  Sioux Falls is located at the intersection of Interstate 90 and 29, allowing for easy travel in all directions.  Information technology is a large enough city to offer all the benefits of entertainment, sports, dining, and a vibrant downtown; yet has the appeal of a small town where you are safe and know your neighbor. Sioux Falls is conveniently located 2 ½ hours from Omaha and 3 ½ hours from Minneapolis.  A great airport with a variety of carriers makes airline travel easy and affordable.

Minimum Criteria for Candidates:
   » Accredited 4-year college degree.
   » Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication expertise and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
   » Must have the capability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
   » Have the capability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered or considered, for both economy and the effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities in which we serve.
Preferred Criteria for Candidates:
   » YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. If the candidate does not possess this, they must obtain Information technology within 3 years from the date of hire.
   » Minimum five years prior practice in a senior management function with a YMCA or related practice at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
   » Fiscally sound business management approach.
   » Strategic planning and fundraising practice including annual and capital campaigns.  
   » A proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management of more than $3,000,000 annually.
Essential Functions
Advocate the YMCA Vision Within the Community: Serve as ambassador for the mission, goals and values of the YMCA. Lead efforts with increasing membership and utilization while delivering high quality programs to the community. Actively interact and communicate with the communities in the region as a representative of the YMCA. Represent the YMCA’s mission to community leaders, donors, staff and volunteers. Assure existing strong partnerships are fostered, and new partnerships are created. Be seen and respected as a leader within the community, while proactively creating collaborations to enhance outreach and program initiatives. 
Fiscal Management: Use a high level of financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth and stcapability while consistently leading the organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. This also includes managing any existing debt and monitoring the budget closely to address competition that may impact membership, facility needs, and anticipate impact on revenue and expenses. Empower and guide staff leaders on the prosperous financial operation of their areas of responsibility.
Maximize and Capitalize On Foundational Pillars: The Sioux Falls YMCA, with a recently re-focused & revitalized mission of Youth Programming, requires the CEO to maximize the potential of several key aspects which ensure relevance for the community The CEO should recognize the impacts and potential of Camp, Youth Programming (After School, Youth Performance Center, YMCA Downtown Center) and ensure the continued success of annual events which are vital such as the annual Tri-State Basketball tournament, annual Golf Event and the YMCA Fall festival.
Improve Operating Performance: Work with the board to develop an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives that will support the YMCA facilities. Remain fully informed of all operational issues and have the keen capability to quickly address any issues that might arise as well as forecast future needs. Opportunities exist to enhance programs in the areas of child care, youth sports and camp. 
Additional Key Priorities
Research & Develop Growth Opportunities: The former CEO of the Sioux Falls Y, along with members of the Executive Team, Board Members and friends of the Y, have begun early discussions related to partnering, affiliating or purchasing assets related to growth in Daycare and Camp. While these activities are in early stages, Information technology will be an important aspect of the new CEO’s responsibilities to hit the ground running with these strategic relationships.
