The Corvallis Farm Unit is seeking a Farm Manager. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed term professional faculty position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.
The incumbent is responsible for the operation of a 54-acre experimental field laboratory devoted to research on diseases of field and vegetable crops, tree fruits, grapes, ornamentals and other plant research requiring field grown plant material. The field laboratory is used principally by OSU researchers studying plant biology, genetics and management of plant diseases, including those caused by bacterial, fungal, viral, and nematode pathogens. Primary responsibilities are to execute cultural and technical aspects of field research projects including plot preparation, planting, fertilization, irrigation, and routine weed and pest management. Responsibilities are coordinated with the researchers and graduate students who have projects at the field laboratory. This position will supervise one classified employee, student workers and seasonal laborers, as needed. Other responsibilities include: managing the facility budget, keeping technical records on pest management and irrigation, maintenance of equipment and the facility, and maintaining a safe work environment.
The need for this position is critical for the operation of the Botany and Plant Pathology Field Lab. Unlike any of the other OSU farm operations, parts of this farm are operated as a pest garden. The various horticultural and agronomic practices can be vastly different from the regular or standard way of growing these crops either on other OSU farms or among commercial growers. This position must not only understand why plants are grown for these pests but to be sensitive to the unique needs of the various researchers who depend on this type of facility. Much of this research would be unwanted or counterproductive on the other farms or in commercial fields.
