An independent, coeducational college-preparatory school in Pasadena, Calif., Polytechnic School offers a broad curriculum in the liberal arts for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Position: Upper School librarian (full-time)
Reporting to the director of the Upper School, the prosperous candidate will take a student-centered approach to all school work and will use the school’s mission to design and support the academic, extracurricular, social, and emotional success of students.
Responsibilities
   » Empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, informed consumers, and ethical users of information;
   » Instruct students in how to use the library and its materials effectively for research and information purposes
   » providing assistance to and in-depth conferences with students and faculty as needed;
   » Collaborate with teachers on developing information and media literacy and research lessons connected with classroom projects;
   » Supervise and mentor students so their behavior supports the library’s academic and social emotional purpose;
   » In conjunction with the other librarians, develop policies and programming to establish standards for and definitions of information literacy and contribute to an information-literate student body;
   » Collaborates with academic departments/discipline specific coordinators on specific needs;
   » Maintains an attractive, dynamic, and current library conducive to reading, studying, and instruction;
   » Evaluates, selects, purchases, catalogues, classifies, and weeds all print and non-print material in support of the school’s programs;
   » Researches and evaluates professional practices, developments, and information technologies applicable to the library program and the school as a whole;
   » Networks with local librarians, maintains active memberships in professional associations, and promotes the school in the wider community,
   » Serves as a grade-level advisor;
   » Enthusiastic participation in the greater life of the school, particularly outdoor education practices and extracurricular activities as an advisor, spectator, and/or chaperone.
   » Interest in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion to promote a healthy learning environment.
   » availability to teach a class in an area of skills.
   » availability to take on other tasks as needed.
   » The library will be maintained with operating hours from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Fridays.
Qualifications
   » Master’s degree in library science and three or more years of practice in the field is preferred;
   » Excitement about leading and developing libraries through community, information, technology, research and books;
   » capability to collaborate with teachers, as well as teach and supervise students;
   » capability to manage competing demands and adapt to frequent or unexpected changes;
   » capability to work collaboratively and methodically with students, parents, faculty, and staff on a regular basis;
   » Strong computer skills including previous use of an integrated library system, use of various databases and other electronic resources, and internet searching skills;
   » practice in maintaining a library budget and keeping financial records;
   » Love of reading, information, and working with students and teachers;
   » Superb organizational skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the capability to work effectively as a team member.
Physical requirements and work environment
   » Work in an environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines, as well as a diverse array of contacts;
   » Work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time;
   » capability to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds;
   » Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment;
   » Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
