Education adjunct - Camp Programs (Seasonal)

Nashville Zoo is seeking upbeat, positive individuals to serve as educators for camp programming. Positions may be trained and available for other programming as needed all over the season, but will primarily work with camp programs. Weekend, holiday, and some evening work may be required.
Camp programs are designed for children ages 4-14. The Education adjunct is responsible for facilitating age-appropriate lessons, activities, crafts, and games that focus on animals, conservation, and the environment. Camp programs are offered primarily between May and August, with break camp programming extending into March and October. The Education adjunct works Monday through Friday, from the end of May through the beginning of August. This is a seasonal, full-time position. The Education adjunct is responsible for:
   » MUST BE AVAILABLE May 21 through August 3, 2018
   » Instructing summer camps utilizing age-appropriate lessons, activities, crafts, and games
   » Creating a positive environment that encourages active learning for campers
   » Communicating with other counselors, lead camp staff, volunteers, and other zoo staff
   » Communicate with lead camp staff on supplies needed for crafts and activities
   » Problem solving situations, including but not limited to changing weather conditions
   » Following safety protocols at all times and emergency procedures as needed
   » If need dictates all over the season, may be trained for overnight, teen, or interpretive programming
   » Other tasks as assigned
   » Excellent communication, leadership abilities, and time management expertise; and the capability to work as part of a team
   » Must work well without direct supervision
   » Must have the capability to follow written and oral instructions
   » Must work well with audiences of varying ages
   » expertise of basic teaching methods as well as non-traditional techniques for early childhood development
   » Computer practice, including use of Microsoft Office and digital media
   » capability to respond to emergency situations calmly and follow protocols
   » practice interacting with the public is required
   » Previous practice teaching or working in a camp setting is strongly desired
   » candidates must be at least 18 years of age
   » High school diploma or GED equivalent required
   » Strong interest or background in education, history, museums, or interpretation desired
   » Bachelor’s degree in Education, Biology, Zoology, or other environmentally related major desired
Physical Requirement s:
   » capability to lift up to 25 pounds
   » capability to work outdoors in rain, humidity, and temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit
   » capability to walk zoo grounds for long periods of time, up and down stairs, bend down, and ambulate quickly
