The Modeling, Virtual Environments, and Simulation (MOVES) Institute, at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School invites applications from candidates for a Research Faculty Associate position. The incumbent for this position is expected to be able to conduct independent research in support of the Modeling, Virtual Environments, and Simulation degree program in the areas of Virtual Environments, Virtual Prototyping, Mixed/Augmented Reality and Advanced 3D modeling. The main tasking for this position will be to support a research project investigating ways in which to represent 3D spaces in computers, processes, and systems that allow for effective interaction with and manipulation of such data. This entails not just the traditional 3D display capabilities, but also ways to efficiently collect real world data, store, catalogue, and share and manipulate it. The objective of this project is to explore how these technologies can be better utilized in this broad range of applications by looking for those aspects of these domains that overlap. The project will focus on how these technologies apply to use in the Navy and how they can be used in the full spectrum of Navy applications from engineering design, prototyping to training. In addition to the research, an important aspect of this project is to work with NPS students to guide their work in support of this research.
The ideal candidate will be very familiar with Navy operations, Navy organizational structure, have a proven record of innovation and have a current knowledge of the emerging trends in VE/AR and 3D imaging technology. Technical depth is critical in the position, so the candidate should have a working knowledge of current software systems used in the VR/AR domain (e.g. Unity Game Engine, Unreal Game Engine, C#, Java, C++, etc.) and with configuration management systems such as GIT. Having hands on practice in designing and developing VE systems is highly desirable. In addition, the candidate should have demonstrated expertise in working with various Navy commands on technical topics both to understand emerging requirements in the Fleet and to help with the adoption of these new technologies. This position will require travel to various Navy commands.

Primary tasks include:
1) Researching the current state of the available technology that supports VR and AR;
2) Working with various Navy organizations to identify requirements of how they can use VE/AR to improve their processes and help in developing and implementing solutions;
3) Providing support to faculty teaching courses that include VE and AR components;
4) Work with students to help with their thesis research.
5) Help manage SPAWAR student fellowship programs.

Appropriate qualifications:
1) An earned graduate degree in a discipline that supports the research line and departmental thesis needs (Modeling & Simulation or Computer Science preferred);
2) Demonstrated aptitude for scientific research; and
3) Demonstrated capability to work with students researchers.
