About National Street Service (NSS)

Established in 2017 with a pilot in San Francisco, the National Street Service is expanding to Philadelphia / Boise for a 5-month exciting, immersive city-wide program.

The National Street Service (www.nationalstreetservice.org) works across neighborhoods, generations, cultures, and city lines to celebrate the people, places, and moments that make our streets so valuable. We honor the soul of our cities by working with everyday people to make streets better places for everyone. The National Street Service is an initiative of Ford's Greenfield Labs in collaboration with Gehl.

Position Summary

We are currently seeking a full time person to lead the 5-month citywide Philadelphia /Boise team. Women, minorities, people with disabilities, and veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.

The City Lead is enthusiastic about streets that support people. The City Lead's goal is to uncover ways to make their streets more welcoming to the people who use them by working with a cohort of 30+ volunteers all over the city. During the program, you and your team will observe and explore your street, create opportunities to help others reimagine what the street is for, build benches, make art pieces, and collaborate across neighborhoods on projects to make streets welcoming for everyone.

Responsibilities and tasks

Support on-the ground team with NSS program and goals by:
– Helping recruit and supporting a collective of 30+ team participants
– Guiding the ideation and execution of small to medium-sized projects in the during a 10-week step by step program with the 30+ team participants
– Managing distribution of significant surveys and providing reports

Work with the headquarters team by:
– 2-3 trips, including an intensive 2-day training at Gehl/San Francisco in – -February 2018 and Summits in April and May. (all expenses paid)
– Co-creating elements of the National Street Service pilot curriculum
– Planning and executing city summits with the NSS headquarters team

Manage external outreach and communication efforts by:
– Cultivating and managing relationships with neighborhood stakeholders, community organizations, and immediate neighbors
– Attending and presenting at significant community meetings and events
– Coordinating outreach messaging and distribution (social media, press contacts)
– Coordinating development of other printed materials as needed
– Meet with with city partners, nonprofits, and other allies from the civic and public sector
– Compiling and publishing a weekly e-newsletter.

Ideal candidates for the City Lead position are available 40 hours per week all over the program*

Qualifications, Skills and practice

– Competitive candidates will bring leadership abilities and skills in one or more of the following areas: community organizing, urban design, tactical urbanism, nonprofit management, economic development, marketing, journalism, city planning, historic preservation, event planning, communications, community development, or education.
– Availcapability: 40 hours per week
– Familiar with local groups and organizations
– Excellent administrative skills such as planning, organizing, recruiting, and scheduling.
– Proven capability to lead volunteers in the field. practice working with diverse groups from a wide age range strongly preferred.
– Strong work ethic, reliable, proactive and self-directed
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Compensation

We offer competitive contract wages and all travel expenses are covered. This is a 5-month independent contractor position and does not include benefits.
