The California Protons Cancer Therapy Center (California Protons) in San Diego, California, is seeking candidates for a full-time radiation oncologist position, with a focus on breast, thoracic, and gynecologic malignancies. Qualified candidates will be board-certified or board-eligible and will preferably have prior practice treating with proton therapy.

In this position, the prosperous applicant will be dedicated to providing excellent, individualized patient care. In addition, he/she will build a strong referral network all over the San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles area through physician and patient outreach, attendance in regional multidisciplinary tumor boards, and participation in Center support activities.

Given the strong partnership between California Protons and the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), the prosperous candidate will be eligible for a UCSD Adjunct Faculty appointment, along with the opportunity to have access to treating with photon therapy at the main La Jolla campus. Radiation oncology residents and medical oncology fellows from multiple residency programs (UCSD, California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC), Scripps, etc.) rotate in the Center all over the year, providing ample opportunities for teaching and mentorship. Research opportunities also abound, with California Protons participating in multiple Proton Collaborative Group (PCG) trials, and its physicians taking active functions in PCG, Particle Therapy Co-operative Group (PTCOG), and NRG.

Center Overview:

California Protons is the first Varian ProBeam Proton system in the U.S, with its first patient treated in February 2014. The Center utilizes pencil-beam scanning in five rooms: three gantry rooms (fully equipped with CBCT and kV imaging for IGRT) and two fixed-beam rooms (kV imaging). The Center also houses its own on-site imaging center replete with a GE large bore 4D CT scanner, GE 1.5 T wide-bore MRI unit, and a GE PET/CT scanner. SDX is utilized for respiratory gating and breath-hold.

Through a partnership with Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego, the Center maintains a robust pediatric service and is equipped with a full pediatric radiation oncology clinic, as well as a recovery suite for patients requiring anesthesia.

California Protons is located in the Sorrento Valley area of San Diego, California. Considered to be one of the most desirable cities in the U.S., San Diego provides a plethora of cultural, culinary, and outdoor activities. The downtown Gaslamp and Little Italy districts are home to world-class nightlife, while the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Symphony, Aquarium, Balboa Park, and many other attractions provide a diversity of activities for young adults and families. Proximity to the ocean, mountains, and lakes, along with the perennial temperate weather, allow for limitless outdoor adventures. In addition, Orange County/Irvine and Los Angeles are situated within 120 miles of San Diego, allowing for access to additional opportunities for cultural exploration.

Applicant Eligibility:

Candidates will have prosperously completed residency training at an ACGME-accredited radiation oncology residency training program and be eligible for licensure in the state of California. ABR certification or ABR Board eligibility in Radiation Oncology (Therapeutic Radiology), or an equivalent board, is required.

Application Process:

Interested candidates should submit a recent CV and cover letter in PDF form to Andrew Chang, MD (andrewlchangmd@gmail.com).
