Position Summary:
The function of the Middle School Social-Emotional Support Counselor is to be a safe, supportive advocate from which all students can obtain guidance or short-term interventions, referrals, and recommendations. The counselor should provide a welcoming, supportive presence and proactively create nurturing, supportive relationships with all students. The counselor supports the administrative team and faculty with mental health recommendations and classroom interventions. The counselor serves as the point person for parents, guardians, faculty and staff, and administrators about student social, emotional, and mental health issues. In addition, the counselor collaborates with other faculty and staff to lead and facilitate community, character, and wellness education programs.

Primary Job Job responsibilities:
   » Student & Family Support: Provides counseling and crisis interventions for students and supports families with resources and referrals regarding issues of student social and emotional concern
   » Faculty and Administration Support: Collaborates with faculty, and administration regarding students’ social and emotional needs; supports behavior committee as a student advocate and serves on MS admissions committee
   » Administrative Tasks: Maintains confidential student documentation, plans, and interprets psychoeducational reports for school personnel and serves as liaison to local professional mental health services
   » Wellness Education Instruction: Reviews curriculum with department and leads instruction for one course of grade-level wellness education
   » Community suitable education Along with Director of Ethical Education, and middle school administration and faculty, develops and/or leads curriculum for community programs and parent forums
   » Learning/Collaborating: Collaborates with faculty and other social-emotional support colleagues within the school, and develops an individualized professional growth plan in partnership with the MS Principal
   » Communicating: Keeps open lines of communication (listening, writing, speaking) with colleagues, students, and families

This is a full-time, exempt position beginning August 1, 2018, and ending July 31, 2019, and reports to the Middle School Principal.

Ideal Candidate:
   » Master’s degree in school counseling, psychology, or social work preferred; Bachelor’s degree required or comparable practice
   » Desire to work with and practice teaching upper school and middle school students
   » capability to support the mission statement of the school
   » Working expertise of developmental process: social, emotional, and cognitive
   » capability to interpret psycho-educational assessments
   » Familiarity with resource information and referral sources
   » Strong interpersonal, technology, and organizational expertise
   » Demonstrates cultural competency, both in and outside of the classroom
   » Sense of humor, flexible, self-reflective, and strong communicator (listening, writing, speaking)
   » Enjoys working collaboratively with colleagues and students
