General summary/purpose:

The Research Specialist will work in the Division of Rheumatology on the Bayview campus. Utilizes solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques and will develop new assays and protocols as directed by the PI. Capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning and troubleshooting of experiments and evaluating and interpreting results. Also provides training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis. May be assigned an independent project and might participate in the creation of manuscripts.

Specific tasks & Job responsibilities:

Participates in planning experiments, troubleshooting/evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed expertise of research laboratory procedures and practices involving modern molecular immunology. These lab-located tasks will include:
   » Flow cytometry analysis
   » Computer located analysis of flow cytometry data
   » Transfection of mammalian cells
   » Construction, purification and use of Recombinant Plasmids
   » Polymerase chain reaction located assays
   » Assays of cellular immune function
   » Independent troubleshooting of technical and experimental issues
   » Selects, develops, performs and evaluates research methods; operates appropriate equipment.
   » Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Be expertiseable of and employ good tissue culture techniques.
   » Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.
   » Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
   » Uses bacterial and/or viral pathogens and is expertiseable of BL2 level lab practices. Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate.
   » Monitors biohazard/radiation safety standards and proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace. Radiation safety agent for the laboratory
   » Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in conformity with established policies and procedures.
   » Keeps current expertise of vendors and suppliers of materials specific to the laboratory requirements. Interacts with company representatives and obtaining quotations
   » Supervises a mouse breeding colony and maintains breeding records
   » Monitors equipment performance and maintenance schedules. May perform routine repair or replacement of standard parts.
   » Exercises professional judgment and assumes complete responsibility for decisions, consequences and results.
   » Processes Human blood, saliva and other biological sample processing for long-term storage
   » Ensures adherence to project protocols and project quality.
   » Maintains equipment, lab area, and supplies in a neat and professional manner. May sterilize and clean glassware, disposing of specimens, media and other materials using appropriate procedures.
   » Performs data entry ensuring complete and accurate database entry.
   » Communicates with and assists Principal Investigator in reviewing and managing study data, troubleshooting, and developing charts, graphs and/or figures.
   » Gives weekly, oral reports at lab meeting.
   » Inventories and orders or makes laboratory reagents and orders laboratory supplies and equipment

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
BA/BS in biological sciences, chemistry, physics or related field. 2 years of significant laboratory practice.
Preferred:Master’s degree with related graduate research may substitute for some practice.

Special expertise, expertise, and abilities: Laboratory practice coupled with a survey expertise of biological sciences, chemistry, or physics.
managery responsibility (indicate the number and type of persons supervised by incumbent): May supervise or coordinate the work of others including part-time personnel.
Participate in the training of undergraduate, graduate and medical students

Starting income Range: 15.65-21.51

Schedule: 37.5 hours per week; Monday-Friday 8:30a.m.-5:00p.m.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide continuing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
